Alan Milburn MP opens latest diaco® surgery in Darlington

A brand new Community Dental Services featuring the for wheelchair patients officially opened its doors to the public yesterday boosting oral care for the residents of Darlington.

Darlington MP Alan Milburn sees at first hand how the diaco® dental chair for wheelchair patients give the dental team safe access to carry out oral care. Pictured with Alan Milburn is Steve Campbell, director of diaco, and Gordon Pybus, Chair of DAD Darlington Association on Disability.

The town’s MP Alan Milburn performed the honours drawing the curtains on a commemorative plaque at Park Place built by Darlington Primary Care Trust.

Mr Milburn said: “It is great to be in this new health centre which is very different from the one it replaces. It is a symbol of some of the things that are going on in the health service locally and nationally.

“People want to be treated in the community in primary care where it is accessible. It is also much better for the staff who work here to be in such a nice environment.

“It is a welcoming and flexible facility which will make a huge difference for generations to come ensuring patients have the highest possible quality of care.”

PCT chief executive Colin Morris added: “The facility reflects a lot of insight and thoughtfulness in design which can only improve standards of care in the town and it is something of which we can all be justifiably proud.”

The Community Dental Service has a traditional dental chair along side a diaco® dental chair for wheelchair patients, allowing wheelchair users to remain in the safety and comfort of their own wheelchair throughout their dental treatment.

All clinical facilities are on the ground floor to maximise access for disabled and elderly people. The first floor provides office space for administrative staff.

Park Place in Darlington is latest of many Community Dental Services across England whose staff and wheelchair patients benefit from using the diaco® dental chair for wheelchair patients.

Prior to the delivery of the unit, diaco® provided input to the PCT on surgery planning and design of this LIFT project to ensure that surgery was fully functional for both the disabled and able bodied patients.
